William McKendree Snyder (American, 1848-1930) was born in Liberty, Indiana in 1848. His earliest painting is dated 1865 and his latest 1927. He was painting in Brown County in 1870-72 while he was living in Columbus, Indiana, and then he traveled East for private instruction. He settled permanently in Madison where he specialized in dense forest interiors, especially beech trees. He painted these Eastern landscapes from 1872-90. He painted more than 700 landscapes of southern Indiana, southern Ohio, and northern Kentucky.
