Paul Sawyier (American, 1865-1917)

Paul Sawyier was born in Madison County, Ohio in 1865.  He was an American Impressionist painter who specialized in landscapes and townscapes.  In 1870, he moved to Frankfort, Kentucky where he primarily worked in watercolors, charcoal, and pastels.  He later adopted oils and continued to work in oils for the remainder of his career.  After 1908 he spent five years on a houseboat, and in 1913 moved to New York.  Sawyier sometimes painted portraits out of economic necessity, but landscapes were his specialty.
