Louis Ritter (American, 1854-1892)
Louis Ritter was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1854.  He received his early training at the McMicken School of Design between 1873 and 1874.  Later, he traveled to Munich to paint with artist Frank Duveneck.  Ritter traveled to Florence and Venice, and by 1883, he had gone to Boston and began teaching at Wellesley College, while painting landscapes along the north shore.  After teaching in Boston, he traveled to Giverny and along with John Leslie Breck, Willard Metcalf, Theodore Robinson, and Theodore Wendel, he was part of the first colony of American artists to paint there.  He returned to Boston around 1890 and died in 1892.
