Also known as "Remie" Carter was born in 1832. A native of Nova Scotia, he spent his career as a carpenter until an accident left him with injuries that prevented him from continuing his trade. Carter then took up painting and excelled at painting marine scenes for the last 10 years of his life.  The artist resided in Gloucester until his death in 1939.
