Robert Knipschild
(American, 1927- 2004)

Robert Knipschild was born in Freeport, Illinois in 1927.  He studied at the University of Wisconsin and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 1950, at the age of twenty-three his work was selected for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s widely acclaimed exhibition “American Painting Today.” Since that time he has recieved wide recognition, with over seventy-five one man shows and several prizes in important competitive exhibitions. In 1951, Knipschild was added to the roster of the Downtown Gallery, then the leading New York gallery devoted to American Art. He has exhibited in such musuems as the MFA, Boston; the Whitney Museum and the Corcan Gallery, Washington DC; the DeYoung Museum, San Francisco; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Art Museum and the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati.  Mr. Knipschild has taught widely throughout the United States and is currently retired from the University of Cincinnati where he held the position of Professor of Fine Arts and Director of Graduate Studies in Art.
