Frederick Waugh (American, 1861-1940) was born in Bordentown, New Jersey in 1861.  He was best known for his paintings of crashing surf on rocky shores.  He wrote instruction books on how to paint the sea, such as Painting by the Sea and Seascape Painting, Step by Step; also, Landscape Painting with a Knife.  Waugh once said it was his return voyage from Paris across the Atlantic that inspired him to become a marine painter.  He painted along the New England coast, spending much time in Provincetown and also visiting other places such as Monhegan Island, Maine.  He was the son of Samuel Bell Waugh, portrait painter; and father of Coulton Waugh.
