William Meuttman was born to German parents in Cincinnati, Ohio. He trained under Duveneck and was a member of the Cincinnati Art Club. Like his contemporaries, Henry Farny and Joseph Henry Sharp, Meuttman traveled to the American West, painting scenes with Indians including the Sioux and members of Soutwest tribes.
