Oscar Berninghaus (American, 1874-1952) was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1874. He was a plein air painter who specialized in scenes of the Pueblo Indians and Southwestern landscapes. Berninghaus began as a lithographer in 1889 and apprenticed as a printer while at the St. Louis School of Fine Art. He made a trip West as a guest of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and became intrigued with Taos in 1899. He began visiting there each summer, until he settled there permanently in 1925. He died in 1952, in Taos, New Mexico.
