Charles Alfred Meurer

(American, 1865-1955)

Charles Alfred Meurer was born in Horb, Germany in 1865. He was born in Germany when his mother was visiting relatives there.  He was raised in Tennessee, but eventually settled in Terrace Park, Ohio where he maintained a studio for many years.  As a beginning artist, Meurer was commissioned by the editor of the Chattanooga Times newspaper to paint a still life incorporating the front page of the paper with a figure surrounded by books and other objects of editorial wisdom.  He succeeded and used this same theme and style, known as trompe l'oeil, in many of his future works.  He was the principal at St. Julian School of Art in Cincinnati in 1891.
